about us

our story

The story of Exceline began over 18 years ago, through founder Margaret's desire to create a place for high-end East African food within the London community. After delivering catering services for a number of years, and winning 1st place in a national restaurant design competiton, Exceline East African restaurant was born in Mare Street, Hackney.

The Exceline community grew over the years, building strong relationships built between customers and businesses alike.  We are fortunate to have received accolades from the Uganda Community Achievement Awards, Uganda Awards of Excellence and the Africa Food & Drinks Festival (Best East African Restaurant UK, 2018).

Today, we reside at our new location in Leytonstone, continuing to provide our community with traditional East African differences and a family friendly atmosphere. We trust that through our food and services, you  will enjoy a portion of an authentic East African experience.

Exceline - Matooke and Beef stew

Creating authentic and enjoyable East African dishes remains at the heart of Exceline’s ethos. Our spice mixes are created by the founder Margaret herself. From matooke to pilau masala many of our foods are sourced directly from Uganda, providing that ‘back home’ feeling.

The Indian diaspora in East Africa, hailing back several centuries, has largely influenced the food of the East African community, which can be seen across our menu. Dishes such as chapatis and samosas were taught to East Africans and passed down throughout generations, leading us to embrace them as our own.

In addition to being entirely halal, you may notice that some of our dishes include freshly barbecued meat, providing a unique flavour. There are also a range of vegetarian friendly mains and sides for you to enjoy.
